6063 vs 6061: Which One Do You Actually Need?

People ask this constantly. 6063 or 6061?

The short answer: if you care about how it looks, 6063. If it has to hold weight, 6061. But the short answer hides a lot.

Both are 6xxx series. Both have magnesium and silicon. Both resist corrosion, both can be heat-treated, both take anodizing and powder coating. After that, they split. 6063 is about 185 MPa tensile. 6061 is about 310 MPa. That is a 60% gap.

Here is the thing. Most people spec 6061 because "stronger is better." Then the anodizing comes out uneven, the profile looks dull, and they call us confused. 6061 anodizes. It just does not anodize as smoothly as 6063.

6063: built for extrusion

6063 flows through a die better than anything else in the 6xxx family. The magnesium is lower, the silicon-magnesium ratio is balanced. The result comes off the press clean. Fewer die lines. Smoother surface. Anodizes evenly whether it is clear, colored, or hard anodizing. Extrusion cost is lower because press speeds are faster and dies last longer.

Most of our window and door profiles, curtain wall systems, and furniture components are 6063-T5. It is not a coincidence. This is what the alloy was designed for.

Heat sinks too. 6063 lets you push thin, complex fin geometries. You cannot do that with 6061. Well, you can try, but the die wears faster and the fins come out rougher. For heat dissipation, surface quality is not cosmetic. Rough fins trap air.

We have been extruding 6063 at Jiahua since 1994. 23 press lines, in-house anodizing, powder coating, CNC. It is still the alloy we run most days.

6061: when strength is not optional

6061-T6 — ~310 MPa tensile · ~276 MPa yield · 60% stronger than 6063
6063-T5 — ~185 MPa tensile · ~145 MPa yield · smoother surface, easier extrusion
Cost — 6061 costs 10–15% more per kg · faster die wear · slower press speeds

6061 adds more magnesium, more silicon, and a touch of copper and chromium. The result is real structural strength and much better fatigue resistance. Truck frames. Trailer side rails. Heavy machinery. Marine components. Scaffolding.

If the profile is carrying a dynamic load, 6061 is not a preference. It is the answer.

Welding is another reason. 6061 welds clean with TIG and MIG. 6063 welds too, but if the assembly is welded and load-bearing, 6061 gives you more margin. We run 6061 for automotive components, machinery frames, and structural beams. The kind of parts nobody sees because they are bolted inside something else.

CNC machining is the third thing. 6061 chips better, mills cleaner, holds tighter tolerances. 6063 is gummier. Not a dealbreaker for occasional machining, but for production runs, it adds up in tool wear and cycle time.

Either could work — depends on the details

A few more things

Cost. 6063 is about 10 to 15% cheaper because it extrudes faster. On a small order, negligible. On a container load of window profiles, it matters.

Recycling. Both alloys are fully recyclable. We recycle all our in-house scrap. No loss of properties either way.

What if you need something between them? 6005A gives more strength than 6063 with decent extrusion. 6082 is roughly as strong as 6061 with better corrosion resistance. There is usually an answer.

One last thing. When you send a drawing, tell the factory four things: alloy and temper, surface finish, what the part is for, and any standard that applies. If you do not know the alloy, say so. A decent manufacturer will look at your application and tell you.
